Spain beat Uruguay 1–0 at Guadalajara Stadium to win Group H and advance to the round of 32. Álex Baena struck in the 42nd minute after Marcos Llorente's cross was spilled by Fernando Muslera, and Luis de la Fuente's side held on despite Agustín Canobbio's stoppage-time red card as Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay suffered a second straight group-stage exit.
Spain controlled the contest with 67% possession, six shots and one on target to Uruguay's five and one in front of 45,065 fans. Canobbio was sent off in the fourth minute of added time after a wild challenge on Pau Cubarsí, capping a miserable night for the two-time world champions who needed only a point to progress.
Spain top Group H on seven points and will face the runners-up of Group J in the last 32. Cabo Verde finish second after drawing Saudi Arabia in Houston, reaching the knockout stage despite three draws in their debut campaign. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia are eliminated.
