The Netherlands and Japan drew 2–2 at Dallas Stadium in their Group F opener. Virgil van Dijk headed in from Ryan Gravenberch's cross in the 50th minute, Keito Nakamura levelled seven minutes later with an assist from Takefusa Kubo, and Crysencio Summerville restored the Dutch lead in the 64th minute before Daichi Kamada diverted substitute Koki Ogawa's header for a late equaliser.

Ronald Koeman's side finished with 60% possession, 10 shots and six on target to Japan's 10 and three in front of 69,285 fans. Summerville, Memphis Depay and Micky van de Ven were booked as the Samurai Blue rallied for a point after twice falling behind.

Both teams sit on one point in Group F behind Sweden, who beat Tunisia 5–1 later on Sunday. The Netherlands face Sweden in Houston on 20 June, while Japan meet Tunisia in Monterrey on 21 June.
